Final grade calculator

Find the mark you need on your final exam. Enter the grade you have and what the final is worth, or type in the whole syllabus and let the calculator work your grade out first.

The percentage your course page shows before the final.

%

Its share of the whole course, from the syllabus.

%

No single grade to go on, or a quiz that gets dropped? and the calculator works your grade out too.

Tight. It rides on the 30% of the course still to be marked.

I need 92.0% on my final to finish with 85%.

How the number is worked out

A final grade is each mark multiplied by its weight, added up. The calculator takes the part you have already earned away from the grade you want, then divides what is missing by the weight of the final.

mark needed = (grade you want - points earned so far) ÷ weight of the final

Take a student sitting at 82% with a final worth 30% of the course. The other 70% is done, so they have banked 82 × 0.70 = 57.4 points. To finish with 85 they need 27.6 more, from a final that can give at most 30. That is 27.6 ÷ 30, or 92% on the exam.

A drop rule changes the sum. When a syllabus drops the lowest quiz, that mark leaves the total and the quizzes that remain share its weight, which is why the same marks can give a different answer here than on a calculator that asks for two numbers only.

Questions students ask

What if my weights do not add up to 100?
Then something is missing from the list, usually participation or a lab mark. Add it as a row and leave its mark empty. Until the weights reach 100, the calculator counts the gap as marks you cannot earn, which makes the answer look harder than it is.
Can the answer be more than 100%?
Yes. It means the grade you want is out of reach with the marks that are left, and the calculator shows the best grade you can still finish with instead.
More than one thing is still unmarked. Does it still work?
Yes. Leave every unmarked row empty and the answer becomes the average you need across all of them, weighted by what each is worth.
My syllabus drops the lowest quiz. Can it handle that?
Yes. Enter every mark, give the quizzes the kind Quiz, and choose how many are dropped. The lowest marks leave the sum and the quizzes that remain share their weight, the way an instructor applies the rule.
Does it work for my school?
It works wherever a course is graded by weighted percentages, which covers Canadian universities, colleges and high schools. Most course sites, Brightspace, Moodle, Canvas and Quercus among them, can show a grade so far. If yours does not, enter every mark and the calculator works it out.
Is anything I type saved?
No. The arithmetic runs in your browser and the page keeps nothing. A link you share carries the numbers inside the link itself. If you choose to keep the course, it is saved to a free Gradus account that you create.
Is this my official grade?
No. It is arithmetic on the numbers you enter. Your instructor decides the grade on your transcript, and rounding rules differ between schools.

The same answer for every course, without retyping it in December

Gradus is a grade tracker built by a computer science student at Trent University. Drop in a syllabus and it reads the weights and due dates, you enter marks as they come back, and what you need on each final is already worked out when exams arrive. A free account keeps it across your devices.
