How Trent calculates GPA

The rules, straight from Trent Academic Calendar.

  • Trent publishes no grade points. The Academic Calendar's letter table has a percentage column and nothing else: A+ 90-100%, A 85-89%, A- 80-84%, B+ 77-79%, B 73-76%, B- 70-72%, C+ 67-69%, C 63-66%, C- 60-62%, D+ 57-59%, D 53-56%, D- 50-52%, F 0-49%. The letter is derived from the percentage for display and never enters the arithmetic.
  • The Registrar publishes the formula: averages are calculated by dividing the total grades by the total number of credits, not courses. 80% on a 1.0 credit plus 70% on a 0.5 credit gives 76.67%, not 75%. Full-year (Y) courses therefore count double half-credit (H) courses.
  • The cumulative average combines all past terms with your current-term grades, at the average each course is actually running at. The Registrar does not round up: 76.67% is never presented as 77%.
  • Academic standing, university-wide: 60% or above is Good Standing, 50 to 59.9% is Probation, below 50% is Academic Suspension. Dean's Honour Roll requires all three of at least 3.0 graded credits, a session average of 80% or above, and a cumulative of 75% or above. President's Honour Roll is a cumulative of 80% in good standing, at graduation only.
  • Not modelled here: a repeated course. Trent counts every attempt in its own session average but keeps only the highest attempt in the cumulative, and this tool has no way to tell it a course is a repeat.
  • For Ontario med, law, or rehab school applications, use the OMSAS / OLSAS / ORPAS calculators instead · they run each course through the OUAC Undergraduate Grade Conversion Table, and they count both attempts of a repeat, which is the opposite of Trent's rule.

This is an estimate. Trent does the official calculation on your application.

The math here mirrors the OUAC Undergraduate Grade Conversion Table (Trent = Scale 3). Each application service applies its own inclusion rules · repeat courses, course loads, program-specific exclusions · which this tool does not model. Always cross-check against your target program's admissions page and the current application cycle's booklet.
