Western University undergraduates · London, Huron and King's
Western GPA calculator for Ontario applicants.
Western does not issue a grade point average. Its transcript legend says so in those words. Your record is a credit-weighted percentage, sessional and cumulative, with six letter grades as descriptors. This page keeps you in percentages, because that is the only number Western produces.

How Western calculates GPA
The rules, straight from Western University Senate Academic Policies · Grading Scale for Undergraduate Students, effective 1 September 2024.
- Western's undergraduate scale: A+ = 90-100, A = 80-89, B = 70-79, C = 60-69, D = 50-59, F = below 50. Six grades, no plus or minus within them, and no grade-point column anywhere in Senate policy or on the transcript.
- The transcript legend states: "The University of Western Ontario does not issue a grade point average for students." The figures Western computes are a term (sessional) average and a cumulative average, both weighted by course weight and expressed in percent.
- Course weights are 1.0 for a full course, 0.5 for a half course and 0.25 for a quarter course. The weighted average is the sum of weight times mark, divided by the sum of weights.
- Failed marks are included, with a floor. Marks below 40% count as 40% in average calculations; marks from 40% to 49% count as reported. A course dropped after the final drop date is recorded as F and counted at 40%. A plain mean of your marks will understate your average if you have failed anything badly.
- Repeats: a passed course may be repeated once and a failed course twice. All attempts appear on the transcript, but only the most recent counts in the cumulative average for progression. Earlier attempts are marked Repeated, No Credit, though a failed one still counts toward the maximum of 6.0 failures allowed.
- Standing has two levels. Level 1 (from 3.0 course attempts): Good Standing at 55% or above, Probation 50 to 54%, Required to Withdraw below 50%. Level 2 (from 8.0 attempts): Good Standing at 60%, Probation 55 to 59%, Required to Withdraw below 55%. Adjudication is in May and again in July or August.
- Dean's Honour List (policy effective 1 September 2026): at least 4.0 courses in the Fall/Winter session, an 80% average and no failed courses. Engineering needs 5.0 courses; Education needs 85%; Ivey and Law use class rank. Graduating "with distinction" needs an 80% overall average, no grade below 70% and no failures.
- For Dean's Honour List, scholarship retention and module progression, averages are calculated to two decimals and rounded to a whole number with .45 rounding up. A 79.45 is 80 for those purposes and 79.45 on the page.
- For OMSAS, OLSAS and ORPAS, Western is on OUAC Scale 3, the percentage column, so each course percentage converts directly. A Western letter cannot be converted at all, since an A spans two OUAC bands, which is one more reason to keep the percentage.
This is an estimate. Western's Office of the Registrar produces your official sessional and cumulative averages on your transcript · this is your own working number.
The scale, the 40% floor and the repeat rule come from Senate policy linked below, and the standing levels from the Registration and Progression policy effective 1 September 2026. The floor is stated for progression and adjudication averages; this calculator shows a single course and does not apply it. Law, Education, Medicine and Dentistry use their own scales, Law with no percentages at all, and are not covered here.
