How Waterloo calculates GPA
The rules, straight from University of Waterloo · Science Undergraduate Office · Grades and Academic Standings.
- Waterloo uses a numerical (percentage) grading system, 0-100. Letter grades do not appear on the official transcript · courses show their percentage.
- 50% is the passing grade in most Waterloo courses. Programs may set higher minimums for certain required courses or major courses.
- Academic standing bands (Science and most Faculties): Excellent (cumulative average ≥ 80% plus major/faculty average ≥ 80%), Good (70-79.9% with minimum major requirements), Satisfactory (60-69.9% with minimum major requirements). Conditional and Failed standings sit below.
- Program-specific rules apply · required averages vary between Science, Math, Engineering, Environment, Arts, and Health Sciences. Some Faculties (e.g. Faculty of Arts) calculate any grade below 32% as 32% for averaging purposes.
- This tool is percentage-first, matching Waterloo's transcript convention. It does not convert to a 4.0 or 12-point GPA · use the OMSAS, OLSAS, or ORPAS pages if you need an application-service estimate.
This is an estimate. The University of Waterloo Registrar produces your official cumulative average and academic standing on your transcript · this is your own working number.
The standing bands here come from the Science Undergraduate Office page linked below. Faculty variation is real · Math, Engineering, Arts, Environment, and Health Sciences each publish their own required averages and major/minor rules. Check your Faculty's undergraduate page for the standing your program actually uses.
