How Guelph calculates GPA
The rules, straight from University of Guelph Undergraduate Calendar · Grades, and the Glossary entries for Cumulative Average and Semester Average.
- Guelph's letter bands: A+ = 90-100, A = 85-89, A- = 80-84, B+ = 77-79, B = 73-76, B- = 70-72, C+ = 67-69, C = 63-66, C- = 60-62, D+ = 57-59, D = 53-56, D- = 50-52, F = 0-49. No grade-point column exists. The transcript records the numeric grade, not the letter.
- The cumulative average is the weighted course total, the sum of credit weight times grade for every course, divided by total credit attempts over all semesters. The semester average is the same over one semester.
- Repeats: from Summer 2026, when a course is repeated the cumulative average uses the highest grade achieved, while every attempt still counts in its own semester average. Courses taken before Summer 2026 follow the earlier rule, under which a retaken failure's original grade left the cumulative. A transcript that spans the cutover carries both rules.
- Failed courses stay on the record and count in the semester average. In the cumulative average they count unless a higher attempt of the same course exists. A failed course later retaken shows an R suffix on the transcript; a grade earned through a supplemental assessment shows an S.
- Continuation of study is decided each semester and depends on standing already held. After 2.75 credit attempts: a cumulative average below 50% is Required to Withdraw, 50 to 59.9% is Probationary, 60% or above is Eligible to Continue. A student already on probation past 5.00 credit attempts is judged on the semester average at 60%.
- Dean's Honours List: a minimum semester average of 80.0% for full-time students, or a cumulative average of 80.0% across a sequence of at least 2.00 credits for part-time students.
- Graduation standing, noted on the transcript: Degree with Distinction at a cumulative average of 80% or higher, Degree with Honours at 70 to 79%, Degree with Standing below 70%. A general BA needs a 60% cumulative average; an Honours BA needs 60% overall and 70% in the major.
- Courses graded CRD (credit standing) and courses taken Credit/No Credit or on a Letter of Permission are outside the averages.
- For OMSAS, OLSAS and ORPAS, Guelph is on OUAC Scale 3, the percentage column, so each course percentage converts directly. Those services count every attempt of a repeated course, which is the opposite of Guelph's rule from Summer 2026, so the two figures are built from different sets of courses.
This is an estimate. Guelph's Office of Registrarial Services produces your official semester and cumulative averages on your transcript · this is your own working number.
The bands, the average formula and the Summer 2026 repeat rule come from the Undergraduate Calendar, linked below. The 0.50 credit weight of a standard single-semester course is inferred from degree totals rather than quoted, and the transcript's R and S suffixes were sourced from Guelph's indexed registrar page rather than a direct read. Associate Diploma programs, Guelph-Humber, the DVM and graduate programs have their own calendars and are not covered.
